The IMMINENT AI Impact on the WP Developer Community

A few months ago, I watched as an AI built a fully functional WooCommerce extension in 17 minutes –  something that would’ve taken us months. My first reaction? “This is incredible!” My second? “Wait… is this how it starts?

Bright office room sunny day showing frustrated programmer stare at AIRight now, developers are like blacksmiths admiring the first assembly line – impressed by the speed, not yet realizing it makes their craft optional. AI doesn’t just build plugins faster; it’s learning to anticipate what we’ll need next. Custom solutions? Generated before you finish describing them. Bug fixes? Applied before you notice them.

I’ve built WordPress plugins for years. There was pride in the grind – the late nights debugging, the “aha!” moments. But now? I can’t ignore the quiet question: “Will my expertise matter when AI iterates faster than I can think?”

What if WordPress could soon generate functionalities on the fly, no plugin repository needed? Need a custom form? AI builds it. A membership system? Done. The old way of coding plugins? Slowly fading into the background. Is this the end of traditional WP development? Very well could be.

The brighter HOPE for the future? Developers won’t disappear – they’ll become conductors. AI handles the code, but we define the vision. The future belongs to those who ask better questions, not just write better functions.

So… are we doomed? Possibly not. But are we entering an era where adaptability is the only non-negotiable skill?

💬 Just a question to all of you out there – ever used AI to build a plugin? Did it feel like magic… or a wake-up call?
