Campaigns associated with that project can be configured around the project’s primary website and the landing pages used by its advertisements.

Campaign Tracker can be used to:

create campaign-specific landing page URLs for advertising providers that support custom destination URLs or URL parameters;

identify which website visitors arrived through particular campaigns or advertisements;

organize traffic from multiple advertising networks in one campaign tracking system;

track different types of link-based advertising and campaign activity;

associate available campaign information with detailed Website Visitor Tracker records;

compare advertising sources and campaigns to determine which ones are delivering useful website traffic; and

analyze campaign activity without having to treat the advertising network’s reporting interface as the only source of visitor information.

Campaign Tracker is therefore best understood as a campaign traffic tracking and analysis module. It does not replace the advertiser’s own campaign-management system. Instead, it provides a website-side view of what happens when advertising traffic actually reaches your pages.

How campaign tracking works

Most online advertising begins with a landing page URL. This is the page a visitor should reach after clicking an advertisement. Modern advertising platforms can attach additional information to that URL so the destination website can identify the campaign or circumstances associated with the click.

Some parameters are values you define yourself. For example, a campaign URL might contain parameters that identify a source, campaign, ad group, placement, or promotion. UTM parameters such as
utm_source
,
utm_medium
, and
utm_campaign
are commonly used for this purpose.

Advertising platforms can also insert dynamic values at click time. Google Ads, for example, supports ValueTrack parameters. Instead of entering a fixed campaign value, an advertiser can include placeholders that Google replaces when an ad is clicked. Depending on the campaign type and parameter used, these values can identify information such as the campaign, ad group, creative, device, keyword, match type, or placement.

When a visitor follows a properly configured campaign URL and reaches a page containing the TraceMyIP Website Visitor Tracker, the visitor tracker reads information available with the visit. Campaign Tracker then uses the campaign information together with Website Visitor Tracker data to organize and display the visit in the campaign interface.

The process can be summarized as follows:

An advertisement points to a landing page on your website.

The campaign URL contains identifying information or parameters supplied by you, the advertising platform, or both.

A visitor clicks the advertisement and reaches the landing page.

The Website Visitor Tracker loads on that page and records the visit and available campaign information.

Campaign Tracker associates the visit with the appropriate campaign and makes the information available for analysis.

This website-side approach is useful because the advertising platform records the ad interaction, while Campaign Tracker can show the visitor who actually arrived at the tracked website and the visitor information available after that arrival.

Using Campaign Tracker with modern Google Ads URL tracking

Older documentation may refer to Google AdWords. The current product name is Google Ads. The underlying idea of passing campaign information through a landing page URL remains valid, but Google Ads now provides several URL-tracking mechanisms that advertisers should understand when configuring campaign tracking.

Final URL

The final URL is the actual landing page a person should reach after clicking an ad. For example, it might be a product page, service page, article, registration page, or another page created specifically for a campaign.

The final destination should contain the TraceMyIP Website Visitor Tracker if you want visits to that page recorded by the project.

Final URL suffix

Google Ads provides a final URL suffix for parameters that need to be appended to the landing page URL. This is useful when campaign tracking information needs to reach the destination page without manually creating a different full URL for every advertisement.

For example, campaign identifiers or other URL parameters can be added through the URL options associated with the Google Ads account, campaign, ad group, ad, keyword, asset, or other supported campaign level.

ValueTrack parameters

Google Ads ValueTrack parameters are dynamic placeholders that Google replaces with information when an ad is clicked. Current ValueTrack options can expose values associated with campaign IDs, ad group IDs, creatives, devices, keywords, match types, placements, targeting, and other campaign characteristics.

This makes ValueTrack particularly useful when a single tracking configuration needs to distinguish traffic from many ads or campaign components.

Not every parameter produces a value for every campaign type. For example, keyword-related values can be blank when an ad is served without a conventional keyword, as can occur with some automated or keywordless Google Ads campaign types. Campaign tracking should therefore be designed around the information actually available from the type of campaign being used.

Google Ads auto-tagging and GCLID

Google Ads also supports auto-tagging. When enabled, Google can add a Google Click Identifier, commonly called
GCLID
, to the destination URL. The identifier is used by Google’s advertising and analytics systems to associate a website visit with an advertising click.

Auto-tagging and manually supplied campaign parameters are different concepts. An advertiser may use Google Ads identifiers while also using campaign-specific URL information that is useful to an independent website tracking system.

When configuring any combination of auto-tagging, ValueTrack parameters, UTM parameters, or Campaign Tracker parameters, test the complete ad URL and make sure the information that you expect to track remains present when the visitor reaches the final landing page.

This is particularly important when a website uses redirects, URL rewriting, link-management systems, consent tools, or other technology that could remove query-string parameters before the destination page loads.

How to configure a campaign

Two elements are required for Campaign Tracker to identify visitors arriving through external advertising campaigns:

A TraceMyIP Website Visitor Tracker must be installed on the pages that advertising visitors can reach.

The advertisement must use the appropriate Campaign Tracker landing page URL or campaign parameters so the visit can be associated with the intended campaign.

For reliable tracking, install the Website Visitor Tracker across the entire website rather than only on one expected landing page. Advertising URLs can change, campaigns can send visitors to different pages, and visitors may immediately navigate elsewhere after arriving.

Placing the tracker near the top of the page or within the site’s common header is preferable because it gives the tracking component an opportunity to load early. If the tracker is placed near the bottom of a page, a visitor who leaves before the page finishes loading may not be recorded.

If you intend to use invisible tracker mode, first verify the installation while the tracker is visible. Confirm that the tracker loads correctly on the normal website pages and on every advertising landing page, including mobile versions or alternate page templates where applicable. Invisible mode can then be enabled for the project.

After the visitor tracker is working:

Open the Campaign Tracker module for the appropriate project from the My Projects area.

Create a campaign for the advertisement or advertising source you want to track.

Configure the campaign information and generate the required landing page URL.

Choose the advertising information that should be represented in the campaign URL where those options are available.

Place the generated URL or required parameters into the destination URL configuration of the advertising campaign.

Save the advertising campaign and test the resulting link.

Confirm that the visitor reaches the correct page and that the campaign visit appears in your TraceMyIP logs.

You can create separate Campaign Tracker configurations for individual advertisements when you need to distinguish them rather than grouping their traffic together.

What information Campaign Tracker can identify

Campaign Tracker works with information collected through Website Visitor Tracker and campaign URL data. The exact information available depends on what the advertising provider supplies, what parameters are configured, and the type of campaign involved.

Campaign information can include:

the advertising provider or campaign source that sent the visitor;

campaign, ad group, advertisement, or creative identifiers;

the type of advertising campaign;

keywords associated with an advertisement when the advertising platform makes them available;

the context in which the advertisement appeared, such as search traffic or another website;

keyword match or targeting information supplied through the campaign URL;

advertiser or source information;

search-related information passed by the advertising provider; and

the placement or referring website associated with an advertisement when that information is available.

The campaign information can then be examined together with the visitor details available through Website Visitor Tracker. This provides more context than simply knowing that an advertisement received a click.

Some information that was commonly available in older advertising systems is more restricted today. Search platforms increasingly limit query-level information for privacy reasons, and automated campaign types do not always use conventional keywords. A blank keyword or search-related value therefore does not necessarily indicate a Campaign Tracker problem. The advertising platform may simply not have supplied that value with the click.

What types of advertising can be tracked?

Campaign Tracker can be used with advertising and promotional methods that send visitors through trackable links. The important requirement is that the destination URL can carry the information necessary to identify the campaign.

Examples include:

paid search and pay-per-click advertising;

display and image advertising;

HTML5 and other modern banner advertising;

native advertising;

shopping and product-feed campaigns that send visitors to website landing pages;

video advertisements with destination links;

email marketing links;

affiliate links;

social advertising with website destinations; and

other paid or promotional links that allow a custom landing page URL.

Older documentation may refer to Flash banners. Flash is no longer a current web advertising format, so modern display campaigns normally use image, responsive, HTML5, video, native, or other supported creative formats. From a campaign-tracking perspective, the important part is the destination link rather than the visual format of the advertisement.

Which advertising providers can be used?

Campaign Tracker is designed to work with advertising services that allow advertisers to specify landing page URLs and pass campaign information through URL parameters. It is therefore not limited to a single advertising network.

Current examples include Google Ads and Microsoft Advertising, along with other advertising, affiliate, email, social, and promotional systems that provide suitable destination URL controls.

Older documentation may refer to Microsoft adCenter. That name is obsolete; the platform is now Microsoft Advertising. Microsoft Advertising currently provides final URLs, tracking templates, and custom parameters that can be used when constructing trackable campaign destinations.

Older documentation may also list Yahoo! Search Marketing as a separate campaign provider. That terminology is no longer representative of the current search advertising market. Yahoo search inventory can currently be reached through Microsoft’s advertising network and partnerships, so Microsoft Advertising is the more appropriate current platform reference when discussing this type of search traffic.

UTM parameters and provider-specific parameters

Campaign tracking does not have to depend entirely on proprietary advertising identifiers. Standard campaign parameters can also make campaign URLs easier to understand and maintain across different providers.

A typical manually tagged URL can identify values such as:

utm_source
for the traffic source;

utm_medium
for the advertising or marketing medium;

utm_campaign
for the campaign name;

utm_content
for an advertisement or creative variation; and

utm_term
for keyword-related information when applicable.

These parameters can be combined with advertising-platform parameters when appropriate. Google Ads, for example, can use ValueTrack placeholders for dynamic values while manually assigned parameters provide consistent campaign labels.

The correct configuration depends on how you want campaigns organized and which data the advertising service makes available. Avoid adding parameters simply because they exist. A smaller set of consistently populated values is usually more useful than a long URL containing fields that are frequently blank or irrelevant.

Testing campaign tracking before spending on ads

Always test a campaign URL before sending significant paid traffic to it. A tracking configuration can appear correct in an advertising dashboard while still losing campaign information because of a website redirect, incorrect URL syntax, a missing visitor tracker, or a landing page that uses a different template.

A practical test should confirm that:

the advertisement or test URL opens the intended landing page;

the landing page loads normally on desktop and mobile devices;

the TraceMyIP visitor tracker is present and executes;

campaign parameters remain in the URL when they are expected to remain there;

redirects do not unintentionally remove tracking information;

the visit appears in Website Visitor Tracker; and

Campaign Tracker associates the visit with the intended campaign.

Repeat the test whenever you change landing pages, advertising URL settings, redirect rules, campaign templates, or tracking parameters.

Using Campaign Tracker to evaluate advertising traffic

The main value of campaign tracking is not simply counting clicks. It is connecting advertising activity with the visitors who actually reach your website.

Advertising platforms provide essential information about impressions, clicks, costs, campaign delivery, and platform-attributed conversions. TraceMyIP provides a separate website-side perspective by associating campaign information with tracked visitors and their website activity.

Using both perspectives can help you compare campaigns more meaningfully. You can identify which sources are delivering visitors, inspect the campaign information associated with those visits, compare different advertising networks, and determine where your advertising budget appears to be producing useful website traffic.

Differences between advertising-platform statistics and website-side visitor statistics should not automatically be interpreted as an error. The systems measure different events. An advertising service may record an ad interaction before the destination website has completely loaded, while Website Visitor Tracker depends on the visitor reaching a tracked page and loading the tracking component.

For campaign analysis, focus on consistent tracking configuration, correctly installed landing-page tracking, identifiable campaign parameters, visitor activity, and meaningful results rather than expecting every reporting system to produce identical totals.

🌍 Who visits your website? Sign Up now to find out instantly!

Campaign Tracker helps you identify which advertising campaigns, ads, keywords, and referral sources send visitors to your website by combining campaign-specific landing page URLs with Website Visitor Tracker data.
